The 5th Annual 2009 Tour de Gaps – EPIC Time Trial & Road Race

In 2 weeks (Saturday, September 19 - TT & Sunday, September 20 -RR) in Dahlonega, GA is the last Georgia Road Bike Race weekend of 2009!

Dahlonega is located 30 minutes North of Alpharetta on GA400.

The 5th Annual TOUR de GAPS has 2 great events.

1. Saturday morning is the Wolfpen GAP 7.5 mile Time Trial. Racers park at Suches Elementary School and begin their grueling trek from the Suches “Store Stop”. Don’t let the first 3 miles of rolling terrain fool you – while it is obviously not as challenging as the last 3.5 up the front side Wolfpen Gap it could make or break your quest for Georgia’s KOM TT Championship. This is an individual Time Trial NOT a group start like last year. Start Times will be posted by 7pm, Friday, September 11, 2009 (www.georgiacup.com) on the homepage under “TT Start Times”. You will finish at the top of Wolfpen gap then proceed back to the parking (Out -Finish & Back -Parking). It is approx 7.5 miles to the Top of Wolfpen and 7.5 miles back to parking (total 15 miles). Awards will be presented for CAT racers AND Age Group Winners! http://twitpic.com/gc4hq
2. Sunday morning is the EPIC TdGaps Road Race. YES, EPIC. The ProAm will race over 90 miles through some of the most challenging terrain in the Southeast. While the Elite and Competitive fields are racing around 50 miles, I can assure you that in those 50 miles you will enjoy every turn of your crank. All 3 categories finish at the top of the back side of Wolfpen Gap – opposite side of the TT. Parking is at the same location as the TT – When you finish you will just continue straight 7.5 miles to the parking and wait for results. Plaques will be presented to each categories Georgia KOM Road Race Champion & Top 3 will all receive custom Awards- http://twitpic.com/gc4hq
3. Race Categories – A = Proam (Pro123), B = Elite (All CAT 3’s, CAT 2’s & 4’s that are 30 year’s old & older and CAT 1’s that are 45+)
4. Women race the EPIC TdGAPS RR for FREE. Register, then at check out use this code: tdgaps09-women-rr. (Does not include TT) Winner in each category will receive a custom TdGaps Award - http://twitpic.com/gc4hq

Get acquainted to the NEW categories that Spincycle has for the Tour de Gaps because these will be the same categories all Georgia Cup & Spincycle Bike racing events will offer in 2010.

Rationale: Better & more exciting racing in Georgia. Incorporating an A B C category system has been proven in other parts of the country and Europe to work very well. It will make racing more challenging & Fun with larger fields! If field sizes are larger than 75 – 100 we will may split the fields randomly. We will not split fields unless safety is an issue. That’s it. BRING IT.

2009 GA State Age Group Time Trial Championships & GCTT Series Finale

Next weekend (Saturday, September 12) in Adairsville, GA is the last Georgia Cup Time Trial of 2009! It is also the Georgia State Time Trial Championships.

Adairsville is located 20 – 30 minutes North of Marietta on I-75 & 30 – 40 minutes South of Chattanooga.

1. GCTT Series Custom Awards to Top Overall Series Leaders
2. GCTT “VIP” awards to the GCTT’s biggest supporters
3. GCTT Championship (This event – not the series) - Winners Receive custom GC jersey (Must have a minimum of 5 competitors in category) – Do NOT have to be a GA resident.
4. Georgia State Age Group Championships receive custom Awards(GA residents only) - http://twitpic.com/gdgf6

Background: In 2007 the GC was approached to start a Time Trial series. We researched and concluded that a TT series in GA would be an excellent project for us. So, in 2009 with the support of ATS, ALL3SPORTS & TURN-KEY TIMING we started the series. Trials are NOT easy to time & get out results quickly, much less instantly like we have done for every GCTT this year. With the special assistance from Turn-Key Timing we exceeded all expectations. It is very rare to race in a TT (Much less a TTT) and get results with your Elapsed Time, Avg Speed, Category Rank and Overall Rank all before you get changed. Then have results posted online before you leave the parking lot. Last, with the help of Dalton Awards & Trophy’s we developed “NEW” custom awards – Bag Tags. Some use them as coasters.

Our goal in 2010 is to continue to provide quality Time Trial events that the entire family can enjoy. While we will reduce the total amount of TT’s, there will be a lot more variety. Race distances will be as short as 5k and as long as 40k.

So, it now time for me to get onboard with all the Tweets……. Now follow the In’s and Out’s of the GC on Twitter.

Beginning this weekend I will test my iPhone TwitterFon during the Georgia Cup Adairsville Time Trial. Giving you instant updates to all the GCTT Series leaders. Later check out the results on www.georgiacup.com.

Later, September 19 – 20th, I will Tweet the Tour de Gaps Stage race. Letting you know who’s who among the Southeast’s best climbers!

2009 Georgia Cup – Gainesville Grand Prix Winner Dustin Mealor!

It seemed like the perfect time to attack – and that was exactly what Dustin did. He ATTACKED the field with big names like Cesar Grajales of Rock Racing & Eric Murphy racing for United Healthcare. Dustin didn’t just win the race he rode off the front and lapped the field with hundreds of cheering spectators and a Band playing in the back ground. After the race a spectator said, “Wow, to win a GC with a field like that is Huge but under the lights with everyone screaming must have been electrifying”. Congrats Dustin, you deserved it. http://www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/article/21317/ http://www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/article/21330/

ABOUT THEIR ADVENTURE

Finish Line - Sunday June 28th, 1:26 am
7 days 8 hours 6 minutes!
Amazingly, after 3000 miles it turned into a real race to the finish as the Georgia Chain Gang was close to several other teams all day Saturday.
At time station 51, 50 miles from the finish, Team Brazil had a 20 minute lead on our guys. Tony and Jerome decided to ride together in a pace line, taking turns drafting and pulling each other in an all-out effort to catch them. David Dowdakin traded off with T & J, riding solo and increased the pace even more!
When our guys finally caught Team Brazil they blew by them. The Brazilians made a vain attempt to catch up by making frequent rider changes, but it was too late. The Chain Gang arrived at the finish 10 minutes ahead. They had made up 30 minutes in that last 50 miles.
You may notice that our team is the only entry in the 4-Person Male 50-59 Age group, so for comparison we marked our times against the youngsters racing in the 4-Person Male Under 50 group. Our time would have placed the team in 5th place in that group. Across all 4-Person teams (all ages and including Mixed teams) the Chain Gang would have placed 8th.
Of course the real accomplishment was finishing and especially doing it as a 3-person team for the last 1000 miles.
For riders this will undoubtedly be one of the greatest achievements of their lives, something they will never forget. For crew it was an incredible experience as well, nothing like anything any of us have ever done. We won't ever forget it either.
We all miss our fallen team mate, Dave Armento, he was in all our thoughts as we celebrated at the finish in the wee hours of the morning.
Finally, we must say again THANK YOU to all our friends, family and sponsors who cheered us on from afar this week. Your encourgement and excitement really made a difference.
From Annapolis, the Georgia Chain Gang

GC Bike Race & GCTT Updated TT Start time Sorting

The GC is always listening to good ideas from our participants.

In the past we have used different methods for sorting TT Start times - Last Name, First Name, DOB, Address & Email. But have never had a specific consistent way to sort the TT Starts – Until now!

Effective with the 2009 Tour of Atlanta's Prolouge & the GCTT #4 in Juliette we will sort Time Trial Start times by the EARLIEST registered online to the latest registered.

So, the later you wait to register the "Earlier" your start time will be.

Another way to look at it is - If you register early you will "CHASE" and if you register late you will be "CHASED". Some like to chase and some like to be chased.

* Race day registrations will be placed at the beginning of their race category or where officials have time slots available.

** Top 3 Series General Classification leaders in each category/division will be seated to start last – Chasing.

*** Please spread the word about this very important update to start time sorting.

Thank you Bob for the great idea!

We appreciate your continued support.

July 18th & 19th Gainesville Bikes and Bands – ANNOUNCED!

We held the July 18th and 19th weekend on the USA Cycling calendar and have confirmed with Gainesville that the cancelled Gainesville Criterium will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 18th. This will be the Finial race weekend of the 2009 Georgia Cup Bike Race Series (Not GCTT). Awards for the series will be given out Saturday night at the Gainesville Grand Prix Criterium.

Every year Gainesville’s Criterium continues to grow and this year is NO acceptation. The local business community is producing a “BAND” block party around the square and is really promoting the event to the community.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! THIS IS THE LAST RACE OF THE 09GC! AS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR EVENTS OF THE YEAR YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT – PLUS, GC SERIES AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED THAT EVENING.

Those of you who attended the events that we replace the cancelled Criterium with will be happy to know we will also have those events as well.

July 18th and 19th will be a bit different from standard GC events. This BANDS AND BIKES weekend will feature the Gainesville Circuit race Saturday Morning followed by the Downtown Gainesville Grand Prix Saturday Night. Then on Sunday we will have the EPIC Gainesville Road Race out at Tadmore! There is no Time Trial for this GC weekend and GC Series points will be scored as usual.

Thank you so much for your support in 2009 we will continue to produce high quality events that everyone can enjoy!

Respectfully,

James Lowe

Historic Roswell Criterium this weekend! Read details about the ToA.

Historic Roswell Criterium is this SUNDAY!

Be on the look out for PRIMES to the ToA in all the races!

The $15,000 Tour of Atlanta is Memorial Day weekend- Beginning Friday, May 22 - Monday, May 25th. Go to www.georgiacup.com to see all the details, Maps, Registration and the $54 per night race hotel (regularly $109)! Hotel is ALREADY filling up – Make your reservations fast.

Alpharetta, GA North of Atlanta and just seconds from Historic Roswell is rolling out the red carpet for bike racing. They have hosted the Tour de Georgia and now want to support Grass Roots cycling. In fact, six of the seven stages are within a few minutes (on your bike) from the race hotel!

Last year’s Tour of Atlanta, was a HUGE success with more than 500 race entries! This year will be event BIGGER! Online registration is already up 20% from last year at the same time. All the courses are on or around many group rides throughout the year – including the Reality Bikes (Cumming) Road Race.

Alpharetta is just like Roswell they want to offer their support but the costs for doing SIX events in the City of Alpharetta are VERY expensive. It is really amazing we have received this opportunity to race there. So, please get the WORD out - register early and often and let’s support this very LOCAL event!

Race Rationale: The past couple of years we have seen the trend of racers not registering for the Omnium. In fact, the past 7 GC Bike race weekends (this year and last year) there has been a decline of Omnium entries. On average 20% of participants are registering for the Omnium, while the 50% of the prize purse is allocated to the Overall.

Coupled with racers suggestions we chose to offer low ALL7 race entries ($25 per stage), increased individual stage payout and pay deeper. Our goal is to reward amateur racers with cash and prizes. Every Amateur Stage winner will receive a CUSTOM glass plaque with ToA bag tags to podium winners.

In addition, we have added the Fastest Lap, MAR & KOM competition to each event. This means that every stage race you are competing for the WIN, Fastest Lap and MAR/KOM for CASH and PRIZES! Plus our friends at Reality Bikes have donated $1,000 for the KOM competition (Allocated among all races)!

ProAM WILL be an Omnium with less weight to the overall (20% instead of 50%). Each stage pays 15 deep (Prologue 10 deep) including the GC! The Most Aggressive Rider is an overall competition NOT individual stage like the amateur races.

Space is LIMITED in the ProAm field,

2009 Mayor's Race Brief

After ROME everyone was hoping for some good weather in Union City and boy did we get it! Clear and 65 - Perfect. The 5th Annual Union City Mayor's Race did not disappoint. The Mayor and City Council were at the CRIT to cheer and marvel at what it must take to do the things bike racers do. You would have to be vision impaired to miss the HUGE support the city gives the race. The CRIT had over 20 Fire & Rescue personal and the Police where there protecting the turns. The RR was spectacular, lead Police for every field and Police at every turn - and there were a lot of turns. They even had Fire Engines out on the course blocking traffic.

The Georgia Cup really appreciates everyone that came to support this event, cleaned up after themselves and to those who took the time to thank the Union City officials. We feel confident that we all will be invited back next year.

Also, thank you to everyone that was patient and poised!

To My Grandfather - Giovani Panaccione (Feb 21, 2009 @ 9:58pm)

TO AN ATHLETE DYING YOUNG

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before the echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

---We will be announcing the 7 race venues for the 2009 Memorial Day Tour of Atlanta Soon---

The GC, as well as several other racing events, will use AMB.it chip timing for all of our bike race weekends (exlcuding the GCTT's). If you currently own your own AMB.it 'chip/transponder' it is still good! If not you can choose to rent for $15 per weekend/$7.50 per event.

AMB.it has set up an easy/hassel free way to purchase a chip/transponder ($109) by clicking here --> http://www.amb-it.com/chipx-transponders-c-1_3.html

All AMB personal transponder owners (RED ProChips) are encouraged to create a personal MyLaps account and register their transponders. This value added service offers racers a free homepage that stores all of their results, allows them to analyze their individual performance as well their team's performance with the goal of improving strategies and results for future races. For more information about the MyLaps service go to www.MyLaps.com.

Racers who rent a transponder from their racing organization are able to view their race results only.
